Tip #67: Use hardboard for sliding surfaces.

Use hardboard for sliding surfaces.

Many drawer builds use metal drawer slides or caster wheels as the sliding surface. These options can take up valuable space and may cost more than you want to spend if you're just dialing in your storage system.

Hardboard is cheap, easy to find, and has one side that is slick. This can make it a good material for sliding surfaces, especially if you pair it with felt pads.

However, be warned that if you have extremely heavy drawers, it might not slide as easily.
