Tip #62: Use a folding hand truck.

Sometimes you need to move around heavy stuff.

This might be an HVAC backpack filled with tools, a container system (like Festool Systainers or Milwaukee Packouts) for which you don't have the cart, or just a bulky thing you need to install on the job.

So consider getting a folding hand truck.

Folding hand trucks can:

  • Save time by reducing the number of trips you make to your truck.
  • Make you less tired and frustrated - think about what it's like to carry a heavy toolbag through a building or manhandle gear while opening doors.

You can pick up a lightweight folding hand truck for around $30, but there are lots of options if you:

  • Need it to open into a 4 wheel cart.
  • Need more weight capacity.
  • Want it to fold into a certain location on your truck.

There are many types of folding hand trucks.

Some hand trucks fold up pancake-flat, usually under 20"x20". A few of these have high weight capacities, but they more tech-y they are, the more they cost.

Some have pretty heavy steel frames and fold out into a 4 wheeled cart. These tend to take up a lot of space but are fairly inexpensive. Aluminum ones that do this are lighter, but more expensive.

There are folding aluminum hand trucks with up to around 500 lbs of capacity! They are expensive, but they often have large wheels and fold flatter than a similar steel version.
