Use a magnetic pencil holder that clips on your shirt, pants, tool belt, or work vest.
It's easier than sticking it in your hat or behind your ear. You won't lose it or break the pencil point, like when you lay it on your work area and smash it.
You also won't waste time looking for your pencil. If it's always clipped to your shirt, your body will just know it's there, all the time.
