Tip #76: Create "incidental" tool and part storage.

Create a storage spot, like pouches or a small shelf, and use it for things you need a lot for a particular job.

Think of this as a spot for things you plan to use on a day-to-day basis, but only temporarily. Such as:

  • You do HVAC and need to install a lot of BX on your job, so your Roto-Split and BX bushings go here.
  • You have two days of spackling and sanding coming up on a remodel, so your putty knife and some hand blocks go here.
  • You're running wire the next couple of days, so you put a few packs of zip ties here.

A pouch or shelf is also a great place to put stuff at the end of the day. Once you're all cleaned up, you remember to empty your pockets: you can toss in screws, drill bits, small parts, that screwdriver you left in a corner.

Then you won't have stuff rolling around on the floor.
