Darryl's crew cab GMC pickup is setup for commercial and residential HVAC service and quoting for his business on Vancouver Island.

Pickups are the norm for HVAC businesses, so how does he do installations?

His business also has an installation van, but he specifically picked out this truck because it was a 4-door and the mid-size GMC Canyon gets better gas mileage than a full size van.

As a crew cab, it has a pretty short bed, but most of his tools are easily accessible from outside the truck.

Utility Cap

The utility cap on the pickup's bed has a rack for extension and step ladders.

The sides of the cap flip up to give easy access to tool cubbies and shelves inside. The side compartments can be lit up with the flick of a switch, great for night work or even just dark days.

On this truck, tools are on one side of the cap and parts are on the other.

No Drawer Slide?

The bed has a simple setup that mainly includes storage for bottles and a set of shelves for tools.

Trucks that use a utility cap often also use a drawer slide to make it easier to get items from deep inside the bed.

However, that's something we tend to see more in handyman or renovation pickups that have long beds and many large tools that need to be brought on site. Think tablesaws, compressors, and transporting 4'x8' sheets of material.

So, Darryl says that he checked out bed slides, but it was hard to justify the cost.

And he rarely climbs in the back anyway! His recovery unit, filters, and the last 2 bottles are the only things that are out of reach.

DIY Wood Bin Structure

A DIY wood platform with cubbies contains some inexpensive long plastic bins.

These hold things like cleaners, pullers, weatherstripping, and electrical parts. While they are a little cumbersome to pull out, all these things can still be easily accessed outside the truck.

Darryl's setup is an easy, inexpensive way to get him 95% of the functionality that he needs with 5% of the cost.
